When Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as "Irro," arrived in Jerusalem for a state visit last June, he delivered more than diplomatic pleasantries. According to foreign reports, his trip came amid intense behind-the-scenes pressure from Arab nations, led by Qatar and Saudi Arabia, attempting to derail the young alliance between his country and Israel.
The relationship began making history in December 2025, when Israel became the first UN member state to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent, sovereign nation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Irro signed the groundbreaking agreement, which culminated in the June 2026 state visit that included the opening of Somaliland's embassy in Jerusalem and the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership.
