In a shocking twist that’s left fans reeling, Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have officially ended their nearly eight-year, on-again, off-again romance, sources confirmed.

The Fifty Shades of Grey star, 35, and the Coldplay frontman, 48, are said to have parted ways for good this time, with an insider declaring, “It feels final.”

A Love Story Born in the Spotlight

Sparks first flew in October 2017 when Dakota was spotted cheering at a Coldplay concert, igniting rumors of a romance with the “Yellow” crooner. By January 2018, the couple went public, holding hands at Stella McCartney’s Autumn 2018 Collection event in Los Angeles.

From there, their low-key love blossomed, with Dakota and Chris keeping things private despite their A-list status. They moved into a $12.5 million Malibu mansion in 2021, and Dakota became a beloved figure in Chris’s family, bonding closely with his kids, Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, from his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow. “I love those kids like my life depends on it,” Dakota gushed to Bustle in March 2024.

Engaged… but Never Married

The couple’s romance hit a high note when they got secretly engaged years ago, with Dakota first sporting a massive emerald ring in December 2020. A source told People in March 2024 that they were “in no rush to get married,” but wedding bells seemed on the horizon. Gwyneth, Chris’s ex, even gave her blessing, calling Dakota “an adorable, wonderful person” and considering her family. Plans were reportedly in place to invite Gwyneth, Apple, and Moses to the wedding. But despite the fairy-tale vibes, cracks were forming.

Ups and Downs: A Rocky Road

This wasn’t the first time Dakota and Chris faced breakup buzz. In June 2019, reports swirled that they split over differing life goals, Chris wanted more kids ASAP, while Dakota’s skyrocketing career, with hits like Madame Web and the upcoming Materialists, took priority. “They were pulling in opposite directions,” a source told The Sunday Express. Yet, by August 2019, Chris was at Dakota’s Peanut Butter Falcon premiere, proving they were back on. In August 2024, breakup rumors flared again, but Dakota’s rep shot them down, insisting to E! News that the couple was “happily together.” They were even spotted hand-in-hand in Mumbai in January 2025, laughing during a romantic stroll.

What Went Wrong?

So, what drove this power couple apart? Sources say the breakup had been brewing for months. According to the Daily Mail, their busy schedules, Chris touring Europe with Coldplay and Dakota promoting Materialists, created a rift.

“They’re both busy people with personal priorities that don’t naturally intertwine,” an insider spilled. Another source told Cosmopolitan that Dakota was “devastated,” especially about spending less time with Chris’s kids, whom she adored. Sources hint at disagreements over marriage and family plans, with Dakota eager to start a family and Chris, already a dad of two, less certain.

Dakota’s Solo Strut and Chris’s Supportive Nod

Just days after the split was announced, Dakota was spotted in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood on June 4th, sans her emerald engagement ring.

Meanwhile, Chris gave a surprising shout-out to Dakota’s film Materialists during a Coldplay concert in Stanford, California, on May 31, saying, “Don’t forget to go see Materialists!” and confusing his fans. “I can see him supporting her even after the breakup,” one fan commented on TikTok, while another quipped, “Every other month there’s a story about them splitting.”

Gwyneth’s Take and Dakota’s New Chapter

Gwyneth Paltrow, who’s stayed close with Dakota, reportedly intends to remain friends post-split, with a source telling People she “adores” her. Dakota, meanwhile, is focusing on her career.

While promoting Materialists (out tomorrow), she told the Los Angeles Times on June 4, “Why do people have to get married at a certain age? Why is divorce bad? It doesn’t matter.” Her words hint at a newfound perspective on love and loss.

What’s Next for the Exes?

As Dakota struts into her single era, sources say she’s heartbroken but ready to shine, with Materialists co-stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans keeping her spirits high. Chris, still rocking stadiums with Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour, is keeping mum but seems focused on staying amicable.

Neither Dakota nor Chris has publicly confirmed the split, and their reps didn’t respond to requests for comment. But with Dakota’s ring off and sources calling it “final,” this love song seems to have hit its last note.
