Israeli Police Raid Breslov Community in Yavniel Over Alleged Underage Marriages

Israeli police raided a Breslov community in Yavniel Wednesday after a months-long covert probe uncovered an alleged network of illegal underage marriages, detaining multiple suspects.

Israeli Police Raid Breslov Community in Yavniel

Dozens of Israeli police officers from the Northern District and Border Police descended on the Breslov community in the Galilee town of Yavniel Wednesday morning, detaining multiple suspects in connection with an alleged pattern of illegal underage marriages conducted within the small, insular community over recent years.

The raid came at the conclusion of a months-long covert investigation, according to Israeli Haredi news outlet Kikar HaShabbat. Among those detained were community members alleged to have organized the clandestine ceremonies, arranged matches involving minors, and conducted the religious ceremonies themselves. A number of minors suspected of having married in recent months were also brought in for questioning.

How the Ceremonies Were Conducted

The investigation exposed what police describe as a deliberate and organized method of concealment. According to the findings, most of the weddings took place in the early morning hours with only a minimal number of guests present. The location of the ceremony was withheld from participants until the last moment, and photography and mobile phones were strictly prohibited to prevent any documentation of the event.

Following the religious ceremony itself, the community would hold a separate, larger public celebration framed as an "engagement party," to which the wider family circles of the bride and groom were invited. This two-event structure appears to have been designed to create the appearance of a normal engagement celebration while concealing the fact that an actual marriage ceremony had already taken place.

February Raid and the Hidden Evidence

In February, acting on real-time intelligence as part of the ongoing investigation, detectives from the Northern District raided a wedding ceremony taking place in a private home in the community. Officers arrived to find the couple dressed in bridal clothing. A search of the premises turned up a ketubah, wedding rings, and a glass wrapped in silver foil, all concealed inside a water system closet.

Over 20 Cases Uncovered

Investigators obtained court orders compelling northern hospitals to provide medical records, and the resulting data led police to more than 20 cases over the past three years in which minors from the community gave birth while still registered as single in Interior Ministry records at the time of the births. The discrepancy between the ministry's records and the hospital data is what appears to have expanded the scope of the investigation from individual suspicion to a systemic pattern.

Israel Police issued a statement Wednesday declaring that the force "will continue to act with determination against any offense that harms minors and the vulnerable, including offenses related to underage marriage in violation of the law. The investigation conducted over recent months in the Northern District is part of an ongoing effort to protect the safety, security, and rights of minors. The Israel Police will continue to investigate this matter thoroughly and professionally, in cooperation with all enforcement and welfare authorities, with the aim of reaching the truth, bringing those involved to justice, and preventing the continuation of this phenomenon."

Yavniel, a small agricultural community in the Lower Galilee, has a Breslov presence that operates largely independently from mainstream Breslov institutions. The investigation is ongoing.
