Karim Khan, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), believed that issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant could help shift Western sentiment against Israel, according to a senior Western diplomat who spoke exclusively with The Jerusalem Post.

The diplomat, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said Khan’s motivation went beyond legal reasoning. “It was clear he hoped the warrants would provide a moral and political pretext for countries like Germany and Canada to distance themselves from Israel,” the diplomat stated. “He told me: ‘You just wait and see. If I apply for warrants against Netanyahu, that gives them the excuse they need.’”

The diplomat was stunned. “My first thought was: How naive can you be? But more importantly, that’s not your job. You’re supposed to follow facts and law, not manipulate geopolitics.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu has blasted the warrants, calling Khan “a corrupt chief prosecutor trying to save his own skin from serious sexual harassment allegations,” and accusing the ICC judges of antisemitism.

The warrants also targeted senior Hamas officials Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh, though Sinwar and Haniyeh were later killed by Israeli forces in Tehran and Gaza, respectively.

Several Western nations, among them the U.S., Germany, France, Italy, and Argentina, have said they will not enforce the ICC’s warrants against Netanyahu or Gallant.

Arsen Ostrovsky, CEO of the International Legal Forum, condemned the move: “Karim Khan has shredded every rule in the book, including the rule of law. This is not justice: it’s a politically driven campaign to criminalize Israel’s right to self-defense.”
