Holding the Line: Inside the IDF’s Strategy to Permanentely Neutralize Hezbollah
Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has told northern residents that the IDF will not withdraw from Lebanese territory until the threat of direct attack is completely removed.

During a series of meetings with local leaders in Nahariya and Moshav Shetula, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir made it clear that the Israeli military has no intention of withdrawing from southern Lebanon in the near future. Zamir emphasized that the IDF is currently "holding the territory" and will continue to operate "deep in the heart of Lebanon" until the direct threat to northern Israeli communities is eradicated. He stated that the primary objective of the current ground operations is to ensure long-term security, and that a retreat will only be considered once a total demilitarization of the area south of the Litani River is achieved. "We will not leave until the threat is removed," Zamir told the local emergency committees, framing the current situation as a historic opportunity to change the security reality of the region.
The Two-Front Success
The General’s assessment of the war highlighted the interconnectedness of the various fronts. He noted that the IDF is successfully operating in two central arenas, the northern front and the direct campaign against Iran. According to Zamir, the significant military achievements Israel has secured against the Iranian regime are having a direct and debilitating effect on Hezbollah’s ability to sustain its operations. As the source of Hezbollah’s funding, weaponry, and strategic guidance is neutralized, the terrorist organization in Lebanon is "absorbing a heavy blow." The Chief of Staff noted that while the IDF has evacuated Lebanese civilians from certain areas for their own protection during the fighting, their return will not be permitted until the security of Israeli citizens can be guaranteed through a permanent buffer zone.
Zamir also took the time to praise the resilience of the residents of the north, noting that their "civilian spirit" is a crucial component of the military effort. He explained that the IDF is working tirelessly to eliminate the threat of steep-trajectory fire, such as rockets and missiles, which has plagued northern towns for months. By dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure from within Lebanon, the army aims to push the terrorists away from the border and destroy the tunnels and launch sites intended for a cross-border invasion. The Chief of Staff’s message was one of permanence and resolve, assuring the people of Nahariya and the surrounding moshavim that the military's presence in Lebanon is a necessary prerequisite for their safe return to their homes.
