Israel Katz Likud Campaign Video Features Airstrikes

Defense Minister Israel Katz released a campaign video on August 3 for the upcoming Likud primary, presenting a montage of Israeli airstrikes set to an apparently AI-generated hard rock soundtrack with lyrics extolling his military record, according to posts from Katz's social media accounts.

The video's slogan reads: "At last, a right-wing defense minister." The accompanying soundtrack features lyrics celebrating Katz's tenure at the Defense Ministry, including the assertion that "The Iranians say, 'God help us'" in response to Israeli military operations. The song concludes by declaring "Israel Katz, what a beast" and praising his "graceful smile."

Katz posted the video on X ahead of the August 17 Likud primary election, in which party members will determine positioning on the party's Knesset list for the October 27 general election.

In promotional materials accompanying the video, Katz argued that he has "broke free of the security conception of his predecessors that enabled Hamas's October 7, 2023, onslaught" and instead led an "offensive" rather than defensive policy. He claimed his approach has "weakened Iran, eliminated terror chiefs and increased the IDF's freedom of action."

The video's release came amid heightened focus on Katz's primary campaign. Just days earlier, Katz announced on air during an interview on the right-wing Channel 14 that he was replacing IDF Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth. Katz criticized Bluth for attempting to renew an administrative restraining order against a settler suspected of involvement in a violent incident against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The IDF quickly issued a sharp statement saying Bluth would remain in his post, contradicting Katz's public announcement. Military officials said Bluth's authority to issue administrative orders was his to exercise independently of Defense Ministry approval.

Katz's focus on primary positioning has drawn scrutiny from both military and political observers. A Times of Israel report indicated that Katz left a security cabinet meeting early on August 8 to attend a Likud wedding, with Israeli media noting that his absences from security deliberations coincide with Likud primary activity.

The campaign video's imagery and messaging target the right-wing base of the Likud party, emphasizing military offensive capability and confrontation with Iran. The video does not address broader strategic considerations, peace negotiations, or other defense policy dimensions beyond offensive military operations.

The Likud primary is expected to be competitive, with multiple candidates positioning themselves for favorable placement on the party's October election list.
