IDF to Conduct Tsunami Preparedness Drill

Tsunami Incoming? Israel Launches Urgent Coastal Drill After Shocking Seismic Warnings

Israel’s military and emergency authorities are ramping up preparations for a rare but potentially catastrophic natural disaster. A coastal drill simulating a tsunami threat will test national readiness in light of recent seismic warnings and government directives.

In response to recent directives from Israel’s National Security Council (NSC), the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will conduct a tsunami preparedness drill on Wednesday morning (Tomorrow) in the western area of Rishon LeZion. The exercise is part of a broader national initiative to evaluate emergency response protocols and bolster readiness in the event of a tsunami impacting Israel’s Mediterranean coastline.

As part of the drill, a single siren will sound at 10:15 a.m. to simulate a tsunami warning. Residents in the area can also expect to see increased movement of security and emergency forces along the shoreline, as part of the exercise’s operational component. The IDF has stressed that there is no real security threat, and the activity is strictly a pre-planned training exercise.

This drill follows a directive issued just over three months ago to various government ministries, instructing them to begin planning and preparing for the possibility of a tsunami affecting Israel. That instruction was issued in the wake of a series of unusual seismic events near the Greek island of Santorini, which prompted a situational assessment by the NSC. Experts at the time warned that a strong earthquake in that region could trigger a tsunami capable of reaching the eastern Mediterranean, including Israel's shores.

According to the summary of that NSC briefing, emergency services and relevant ministries were advised to prepare contingency plans and ensure operational readiness. The NSC warned that "Israel must be prepared for the possibility of a tsunami wave heading toward its shores."

Dr. Ariel Heiman, a senior geologist and researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), commented on the current threat level, emphasizing that while a tsunami remains an unlikely event, the threat is not negligible. He explained that in the event of a significant quake in the region, there would likely be enough lead time to warn Israeli citizens. “We must remain alert, but there’s no need for excessive concern,” Dr. Heiman reassured.

Israel, which lies near the seismically active African and Arabian tectonic plates, has experienced minor tsunamis in its history, though none in recent decades have caused significant damage. However, given growing awareness of the risks posed by natural disasters, particularly in light of increased global seismic activity, this drill reflects a shift toward proactive preparedness.

The IDF and other emergency services are using the opportunity not only to test siren systems and response logistics but also to assess public awareness and reaction in the event of such a rare but potentially devastating natural event.
