Karina Ariev, the IDF surveillance soldier freed from Hamas captivity in Gaza, affixed a mezuzah to the doorpost of her new bedroom on Wednesday night in an emotional ceremony accompanied by Rabbi David Druk of the Kissufim organization, according to Kikar HaShabbat.
The moment, which took place at Ariev's home, symbolized her continued return to ordinary life after 477 difficult days in Hamas captivity. Ariev held the mezuzah and pressed it to the doorframe with visible emotion, with Rabbi Druk, who has accompanied hostage and captive families since the Simchat Torah attack, standing beside her. Channel 14 journalist Yaki Adamker, who has been documenting a broader mezuzah affixing initiative, shared footage of the moment and offered Ariev his congratulations.
Ariev has previously spoken about her captivity in emotionally raw terms at an event held by the Jewish Relationship organization, describing a faith that carried her through months of fear and uncertainty. She has said she does not feel anger at God, but that she cries out to him the way one cries out to a father, describing moments of asking why a particular blow felt so painful. She has said that all of the hostages held in Gaza felt a tangible sense of divine protection, and that surviving the ordeal there was not possible without complete faith in God.
Among the moments she has described from her captivity is a decision she and her fellow captives made to observe the laws of Passover even under the conditions of their imprisonment, saying the group agreed not to eat leavened bread and that for seven days none of them touched pita despite their hunger. She has also described an act of bravery from the morning of the Simchat Torah attack, saying that when terrorists threw grenades into the observation post at the Nahal Oz base, she pushed one of the grenades back out toward the attackers, an action she has said saved her life and the lives of her fellow soldiers.
For Ariev and her family, Wednesday's mezuzah ceremony marks another milestone in what she has described as a new chapter of returning to life, routine and hope. She has said in the past that she received her life back, and that she survived for the sake of her family and her friends.
