A football player currently active in a senior Israeli league was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of illegal gambling, large-scale betting activity and possible match-fixing.
Police said the player is also suspected of offenses under the Prohibition on Money Laundering Law and tax offenses, allegedly carried out together with others.
According to police, additional suspects and involved parties are expected to be questioned as the investigation continues.
The arrest was carried out as part of a broader investigation into a criminal group from Migdal HaEmek, handled by the Northern Financial Enforcement Unit of Lahav 433. The player’s arrest follows several arrests made last week in the same case, which is being investigated by Lahav 433’s unit dealing with bribery and gambling in sports.
Police said the investigation is being conducted in full cooperation with the Israel Football Association.
According to the suspicion, the footballer gambled systematically and illegally, in a manner police described as inappropriate for an active player in a senior club.
The identity of the player and the club have not yet been released. The investigation is expected to continue in the coming days, with police examining whether the alleged betting activity was connected to attempts to influence match outcomes.
The case has raised concern in Israeli football because of the possible link between illegal gambling and match integrity. If the suspicions are confirmed, the affair could become one of the more serious sports corruption cases handled by Israeli authorities in recent years.
