Minister Miri Regev, who oversees Independence Day events, announced Rachel Edry's selection to light a torch. The choice was made based on recommendations from the public advisory committee, as someone who exemplifies the finest spirit of the Israeli people.

Courage in Crisis: The Story That Moved the World

Rachel Edry became a global symbol thanks to her extraordinary resourcefulness during the October 7th events. When terrorists broke into her home and held her and her late husband David hostage for about a day, Rachel didn't lose her composure. In an act of courage and wisdom, she spoke with the terrorists, gained their trust, and even served them homemade cookies. Her resourcefulness greatly assisted the rescue operation that saved her life and her husband's, who passed away several months after that black Saturday.

"Even the most imaginative writers couldn't have invented a wonderful character like Rachel from Ofakim," said Minister Regev. "A powerful and moving woman who, through intelligence, courage, and cookies, managed to outsmart the terrorists and become a hero to an entire nation."

Returning Home: A Symbol of Hope and Determination

After the traumatic events, Rachel chose to return to her home in Ofakim and rebuild it, demonstrating determination and a deep connection to her place. Her actions continue to inspire Israelis, who see in her an example of the power of the human spirit and the ability to rise above difficulties.

At the torch-lighting ceremony, which will be held this year under the theme "Bridges of Hope," Rachel will represent those people who connect the different parts of Israeli society. Minister Regev noted that "The entire nation looked up to Rachel with admiration, and I'm sure there won't be a dry eye when she lights the torch on Mount Herzl."

Torch Ceremony: A Celebration of Unity and Hope

The torch-lighting ceremony on the 77th Independence Day will highlight stories of heroism and connection from people like Rachel, who remind us that what unites us is greater than what divides us. The torches will be lit by visionaries and doers who strengthen hope in all areas of life in Israel, thus presenting the beautiful faces of Israeli society.

Rachel from Ofakim represents not just a story of personal heroism, but also a reminder of the power of community and the importance of shared hope. On the upcoming Independence Day, when Rachel lights the torch, she will remind us all of the ability to face challenges, build bridges, and strengthen faith in a better future.
