The heart of Beirut’s Dahiya district was rocked by a series of powerful explosions on Thursday evening as the Israeli Air Force resumed its strikes on the Lebanese capital. Following a month of relative quiet in the city, the military launched a high-stakes mission to eliminate the top leadership of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a rare joint statement shortly after the blasts, confirming that the central target was Muhammad Raleb Balut, the commander of the elite unit.

Security assessments suggest that Balut was meeting with his deputy and several other senior Hezbollah officials at the time of the precise aerial bombardment. The Radwan Force is the unit responsible for Hezbollah's invasion plans into northern Israel and the persistent rocket fire that has displaced thousands of Israeli civilians. In their announcement, Netanyahu and Katz emphasized that no terrorist enjoys immunity and that Israel’s long arm will reach every individual responsible for murdering or wounding its citizens.

The decision to carry out this specific strike follows a period of extreme tension and a previous hesitation by the political echelon. Last week, it was revealed that Balut and his deputy had been identified in the sights of the security establishment, but the government chose to wait for an optimal operational window. Defense officials noted that Balut recently ordered nearly 1,000 Radwan fighters to deploy toward the southern border and was the mastermind behind the recent launch of suicide drones against Israeli forces despite the theoretical ceasefire.

Beyond the physical elimination of leadership, the IDF has been working to dismantle the infrastructure Balut oversaw. Division 36 recently foiled a plan by Radwan forces to establish a new line of defense in southern Lebanese villages to facilitate a future raid into Israeli territory. During these operations, the military discovered and destroyed an unusually sophisticated two-kilometer-long tunnel, hidden 25 meters underground, which was intended to support a large-scale ground infiltration.

This strike serves as both a tactical success and a morale blow to the Iranian-backed terrorist organization. Military experts believe the loss of Balut will severely disrupt Hezbollah's command and control capabilities in the north. As the military remains on high alert for a potential retaliatory response, the message from Jerusalem is clear: the commitment to returning northern residents to their homes involves the systematic dismantling of any elite threat stationed across the border.
