Strauss, Israel at War
Iconic ice cream plant suspends operations amid rising tensions
Strauss plant in Acre halts production, citing security concerns over possible Hezbollah retaliation; no ice cream shortages anticipated.

The Strauss Ice Cream Plant in Acre has been forced to cease operations following directives from the Home Front Command amid rising tensions in northern Israel.
This precautionary measure comes in response to heightened security concerns and potential retaliation from Hezbollah for the recent assassination of a top Hezbollah commander. The plant, a key facility for Strauss ice cream production, uses ammonia gas, which is essential for cooling systems and freezers. As a result of the shutdown, operations at the plant are temporarily halted to minimize risks associated with the hazardous materials on-site.
Home Front Command's emergency protocols mandate that facilities storing explosive gases, such as ammonia, take immediate action to reduce potential dangers. Strauss officials have reassured the public that if the shutdown is limited to a few days, there should be no significant ice cream shortages, thanks to the existing summer stockpiles that are currently available. Unilever, the parent company of Strauss, confirmed the operational pause, emphasizing its commitment to safety and adherence to the latest security measures.
In the wake of these developments, Hazor HaGlilit Council Head Michael Kabesa has urged Home Front Command to extend similar safety measures to the Pri HaGalil food plant within the municipality. Kabesa highlighted the importance of preemptive action, stating, "The situation is heating up, and we must avoid being caught unprepared. The assassinations and the anticipated Hezbollah response indicate a high potential for escalation, and we must be ready in advance to protect our community."
