In a letter addressed to "our friend, the great Gaon" Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, a number of Rabbis expressed their support today (Tuesday) for the former Sefardi Chief Rabbi's opposition to the draft of any observant Haredi Jew, even if they are not learning in yeshivah in any capacity.
The letter's author claimed that this was the policy of Rabbi Ovadyah Yosef, an undisputed Rabbinic leader and founder of the Shas party, who they claim even opposed special Haredi tracks for enlisted Haredi young men, "and he did not move out of fear of the government and the view of the masses and the talk of the media."
The letter further claimed that anyone attempting to claim otherwise regarding Rabbi Ovadyah's views on the matter are distorting the truth and lying to the public.
The letter ends with the hope that Rabbi Yosef will stand firm in his beliefs and "not fear anyone" for the sake of preserving and protecting Torah and Miztvot.
