Cost of the Deal: Terrorists Released in Fifth Phase of Hostage Agreement

Revealed: These are the Prisoners Released in Yesterday's Hostage Deal

As part of the fifth phase of a controversial hostage agreement, Israel has freed 183 Palestinian prisoners from its jails, including 18 who were serving life sentences for their roles in acts of terror. These prisoners were released as part of an arrangement with Hamas and other factions, amid ongoing tensions and negotiations.

Among the individuals freed were some individuals with notorious histories, responsible for devastating attacks on Israeli civilians. One of the most high-profile releases is that of Iyad Abu-Shakhdam, who was sentenced to 18 life terms. Abu-Shakhdam served as a deputy to Imad Qawasmeh, the head of Hamas's military wing in Hebron. He was convicted for his involvement in the planning and execution of the double bus bombings in Be'er Sheva in August 2004, which killed 16 people and injured about 100 more. Abu-Shakhdam was also responsible for preparing explosives for other planned attacks, including a suicide bombing attempt in Jerusalem in 2004.

Another notable release is Hatam Al-Jayusi, a founder of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He was serving six life sentences and an additional 55 years for planning a shooting attack during the second intifada that killed six Israelis. His release raises concerns given the continued ties between such individuals and ongoing violent factions.

Several other terrorists with significant records of violence were also released, including Yousef Al-Mabhouh, a Hamas member who was involved in rocket launches and tunnel construction. Al-Mabhouh had also attacked a prison warden in 2022, earning an additional eight years in prison before his release.

Other individuals included in the release had varying roles in terror networks, including bombings, shootings, and facilitating terror activities. For example, Jamal Tawil, a senior Hamas leader from the West Bank, had been convicted for his involvement in organizing riots and inciting violence, while Shadi Barghouti was sentenced for his participation in multiple attacks against Israel.

While these releases may bring some progress in negotiations, they also stir deep concern for those affected by the crimes these individuals committed. The full implications of the releases remain to be seen, as the prisoners reenter society amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestinian factions.
