Israel's Health Ministry on September 28 ordered the Medica medical center in Tel Aviv's Ramat HaChayal neighborhood to cease all operations following what it called serious findings in a surprise inspection. The ministry said continued activity at the facility poses a danger to patients.
What the inspection found
According to the Health Ministry, the inspection uncovered cases in which medical procedures were performed by staff acting beyond their professional qualifications and in violation of mandatory protocols. The ministry also reported deficiencies in medical conduct and work processes, describing a systemic failure that endangers patient health and safety.
The district medical officer's order took effect on the evening of September 28. The order prohibits the center from conducting any medical activity until further notice. Medica's management, the chain's owners and its board of directors will be summoned to a hearing. The Health Ministry is examining individual measures against those who acted beyond their authority.
Not the first time
In July, the Health Ministry identified serious deficiencies at Medica Refael, leading to a shutdown of its operating rooms. Activity resumed gradually after the errors were corrected and the chain's management committed to meeting licensing conditions.
Medica's response
The center said it performs thousands of surgeries each month and that its physicians and staff operate according to medical and safety standards. The chain said the inspection concerned isolated cases, called the decision sweeping and disproportionate, and said it would clarify its position with the Health Ministry.
The order remains in effect until further notice. Anyone who scheduled treatment or surgery at Medica Tel Aviv should receive a direct update from the center before arriving at the facility.
