The High Court (Bagatz) issued its first ruling Tuesday in a petition filed by Democrats party chairman Yair Golan demanding that the Shin Bet provide him with security. The justices did not issue an interim order, but instructed Shin Bet chief David Zini to consider "immediately" assigning protection to Golan in light of the level of threats against him.
The petition was filed less than a month before the elections, with the party claiming Golan remains without security despite the Israel Police assessing the threat level against him as high.
According to the petition, Golan is exposed to dozens of concrete, explicit and chilling murder threats, and "every day that passes without security leaves the petitioner as cannon fodder."
The petitioners requested a temporary order, an interim order and an urgent hearing, citing the threats and the proximity of the Knesset elections.
The petition, filed through the Democrats' legal counsel Adv. Omri Segev, reveals that although the Israel Police raised the risk level on Golan to level 4 out of 6, identical to that assigned to Gadi Eisenkot, only the Democrats chairman has not been approved for security.
