Shon Balaish, an Orthodox producer and media personality, told his 300,000 social media followers this week that he turned down an offer to appear on a well-known television cooking show because of his commitment to keeping kosher.
The offer came in a phone call, Balaish said, but he had no choice but to decline. "Unfortunately I had to say no, because the dishes there combine meat and dairy. Even though it's very tempting and very trendy, I had to say no," he said in a video posted online.
Addressing those who might see his decision as a missed opportunity, he said: "Someone hearing this from the side will say, 'Wow, how did you miss out? Why did you miss out?' And I come and say first of all, everything is from the Creator, tests and this is a mission."
