Yair Golan, leader of The Democrats party, has issued a public response following criticism from Einav Zangauker, a prominent activist for hostage families. Zangauker had revealed that Golan reneged on a promise to reserve her a protected spot on the party's Knesset list for the 2026 elections.
In his statement, Golan expressed regret for the disappointment caused while defending his decision. "Einav, you are dear to my heart. I deeply appreciate and respect you, the courage, determination and strength with which you led a struggle that saved lives," Golan wrote. "I know that my decision disappointed you, and I am deeply sorry for that. This was my decision, and I take full responsibility for it and for the pain it caused you."
The former general explained that he chose not to use his authority to reserve any spots on the party list out of respect for the democratic process. "I decided not to exercise my right to reserve spots, out of respect for the decision of 113,000 members of The Democrats and out of confidence in the excellent list they chose," he stated. "This is a decision I made regarding the entire list, and other candidates who were considered for reserved spots received the same message from me: there will be no reserved spots."
Despite the controversy, Golan extended an offer to Zangauker to continue working together. "I hope our path has not ended. We have a major struggle ahead for the character and future of this country—for establishing a state commission of inquiry, for replacing the failed government, and for rebuilding Israel," he wrote.
He concluded with a proposal: "I offered you a meaningful role in the campaign and to continue working with us after the elections as well. That offer still stands. I see you as an important partner on this path, and I hope you will choose to accept it and that we will accomplish much together."
