The Taba Detour: How Arkia is Keeping Israelis Flying During Operation Roaring Lion
With Israeli airspace under heavy restriction due to the war, Arkia has launched an emergency flight hub in Taba, Egypt, to bring citizens home via the southern border.

As the security situation intensifies under Operation Roar of the Lion, Israel's aviation landscape is undergoing a radical transformation to maintain a connection to the outside world. Following strict directives from security authorities and aviation regulators, Arkia has officially canceled all standard flight operations through Tuesday, March 3. However, in a strategic move to bypass the chaos of the central region, the airline is pivoting its entire international operation to Taba International Airport in Egypt. By utilizing the Taba border crossing as a gateway, Arkia and its partner Electra Airways are creating a vital lifeline for Israelis traveling to and from Europe, ensuring that the war does not completely sever the nation's travel capabilities.
The Taba Operation and Electra Airways
The temporary suspension of flights at Ben Gurion Airport has forced Arkia International to expand its cooperation with Electra Airways. This partnership will utilize Airbus A320 aircraft to run an expanded schedule through Taba, satisfying the massive demand from Israelis looking to return home or travel for essential reasons. Because Taba sits just across the southern border from Eilat, it provides a safer alternative for takeoff and landing during active missile threats in the center of the country.
Fixed Fares and Destinations
To provide transparency during the crisis, the company has released uniform website fares for the Taba routes. Travelers can fly from Athens for $449, from Larnaca for $359, and from Rome for $549. These prices are subject to seat availability, but the airline is attempting to keep them stable to assist those caught in the travel disruptions. The updated schedule for Monday and Tuesday, March 2 to 3, includes multiple daily rotations. Flights from Athens will depart at 05:00 and 12:50, while the Rome flight is scheduled for a 05:00 departure. The Larnaca leg is set for a mid morning departure from Taba at 10:50, returning from Cyprus at 13:15.
Transportation from the Border
Recognizing that landing in Egypt is only the first step of the journey, Arkia has coordinated a massive logistics chain with Egged buses. Passengers who land in Taba and cross the border on foot into Israel will find a fleet of buses waiting outside the terminal. These shuttles are scheduled to transport travelers to key hubs across the country, including the Eilat Central Bus Station, Be’er Sheva, the long term parking lots at Ben Gurion Airport, and the Savidor station in Tel Aviv. This "air to ground" bridge is designed to get families back to their homes as safely and quickly as possible while the military continues its operations against the Iranian axis and its various terrorist proxies. Arkia has stated it will continue to update the public as instructions from the regulators evolve.
