Threats Following Sydney Massacre
Global Alert: Israeli National Security Council Warns of Copycat Attacks as Major Cities Boost Hanukkah Security
Following the Sydney terror attack, Israel's National Security Council issued a severe warning about copycat attacks and urged Israelis to avoid unsecured Hanukkah events, as major global cities immediately deployed increased security around Jewish sites.

Israel Issues Urgent Security Warning
The National Security Council (NSC) in Israel published heightened guidelines for Israelis staying abroad today, Sunday, following the antisemitic terror attack in Sydney, Australia, which left at least 15 people murdered during a Jewish community Hanukkah party. The NSC cited a tangible fear of subsequent attacks, noting that past experience teaches there is a real concern for "copycat phenomena" by terror supporters who may be inspired to act after the Sydney massacre.
Due to this real and present danger, the NSC strongly urged Israelis abroad to adhere to a series of stringent safety precautions. The primary directive is to strictly avoid attending large, unsecured public events, specifically naming events at synagogues, Chabad houses, Hanukkah parties, and similar communal gatherings.
Furthermore, Israelis were advised to maintain a heightened state of vigilance around all Jewish and Israeli sites and to immediately report any suspicious individuals or unusual objects to local security forces. The NSC noted that updated and additional safety recommendations are continually published on its official website.
Global Security Bolstered for Hanukkah
The Sydney attack, which adds to a series of terror incidents against Jewish communities worldwide over the past two years, has triggered a massive security response in major global cities. Past attacks included the murder of Israeli embassy employees Yaron Lishinsky and Sarah Milgrom in Washington in May, and a synagogue attack in Manchester last October that killed two people. The global atmosphere, exacerbated by protests calling to "Globalize the Intifada" in Australia and the West, has left Jews everywhere deeply fearful.
In response, security around Hanukkah events has been dramatically increased in cities across Europe and the US:
Experts Warn of Evolving Threat
Beni Sabti, an Iran researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), warned of Iran’s potential attempts to carry out attacks against Jewish communities globally. He pointed to Jewish holidays as volatile security dates, noting the recent pattern of attacks: "Look how this thing repeats itself during holidays, Simchat Torah in Israel, Yom Kippur in England, and now Hanukkah in Australia."
Sabti issued a dire call to action, saying, "We probably need to re-evaluate the world in a different way and perhaps also call on Jews to immigrate to Israel. Our place is not in these countries." He also cautioned that Jewish communities must consider taking additional security steps, suggesting, "Jewish communities should also assign their own police officers."
