The Pentagon has told US lawmakers it could take up to six months to clear naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz, according to a source familiar with a classified briefing on the issue.

Defense Department officials delivered the assessment during a closed-door session with the House Armed Services Committee this week, outlining the scope of the challenge in securing the critical shipping route.

The briefing raised broader concerns among lawmakers, who pressed officials on the overall cost of the war with Iran, as well as the administration’s strategy and long-term objectives. Several questions reportedly remained unanswered following the session.

Lawmakers also sought further clarification about a strike on a school compound in the early days of the conflict, an incident that continues to draw scrutiny.
