Secret Israeli Air Base Exposed in Iraq: U.S. Intervened to Block Local Investigation

A secret military facility in Iraq served as a clandestine hub for Israeli Special Forces and a vital logistics center for the Israeli Air Force (IAF), according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The facility allowed Israel to significantly shorten flight distances for missions targeting Iran, providing a strategic staging ground that enhanced the IAF's long-range strike capabilities. U.S. officials cited in the report stated that the outpost was "essential" to the success of recent aerial operations against Iranian targets.

U.S. Shielded Israeli Activity

The exposure of the site highlights the volatile security landscape in Iraq, where pro-Iranian militias operate in close proximity to U.S. forces. According to the report, the U.S. military directly intervened to prevent Iraqi security forces from investigating suspicious activity at the site, effectively shielding Israeli operations from local oversight.

This direct American intervention has raised sharp questions regarding Iraqi sovereignty and the extent of U.S. control over Iraqi territory. While the Iraqi government has officially maintained a stance of neutrality or opposition to Israeli presence, the report suggests a deep level of operational coordination between Washington and Jerusalem on Iraqi soil.

Strategic Advantage

The clandestine base functioned as more than just a refueling stop; it served as a forward logistics center that provided the intelligence and technical support necessary for high-precision strikes. By utilizing this secret location, Israeli aircraft were able to bypass traditional detection routes and maintain a sustained presence near the Iranian border.

Neither the Pentagon nor the Israeli Ministry of Defense has issued a formal comment on the Wall Street Journal report.
