The roof of a New Jersey shopping center collapsed due to severe weather. Twenty-seven people were inside the building, with two partially trapped before freeing themselves
Dozens of emergency crews were dispatched to a shopping center in Ocean Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, after a section of the building's roof collapsed due to extreme weather, trapping people inside the store.
Footage from the scene shows shoppers going about their routine just moments before a portion of the roof caves in, sending massive amounts of rainwater pouring into the store.
A miracle from above
According to authorities, 27 people were inside the building at the time of the collapse. Two individuals became partially trapped beneath the debris but managed to free themselves and safely exit the building. No injuries were reported.
Rescue forces conducted thorough searches to ensure no other individuals remained trapped, utilizing specialized rescue units, a Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office drone, and canine rescue teams from the New Jersey Urban Search and Rescue task force.
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden praised the quick response of the emergency forces, stating that "this incident is yet another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable situations."
