Pentagon Confirms 3 MQ-9 Reapers Downed as Iran Deploys 'Silent Hunters'
Three U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones have been lost in the first week of the Iran war, including one downed by Qatari friendly fire.

The Pentagon has confirmed that three American MQ-9 Reaper drones have been downed since the start of Operation Epic Fury on February 28. The losses highlight the persistent dangers in Iranian-contested airspace, even as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) claims significant degradation of Iran's traditional air defenses.
While the Reaper is a cornerstone of U.S. surveillance and precision strike capabilities, it has proven vulnerable to Iran’s layered "asymmetric" defense network.
According to official reports:
Iran’s "Silent Drone Hunters"
The losses are being attributed to what Tehran calls its "Silent Drone Hunters"—radar-silent interceptors like the Majid and the 358 loitering missile. Unlike traditional SAM batteries, these systems operate without active radar signatures, making them nearly impossible for the Reaper’s electronic warfare suites to detect before impact.
Pentagon Response
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth downplayed the losses, emphasizing that the U.S. is rapidly deploying cheaper, "attritable" alternatives like the LUCAS, a $35,000 kamikaze drone reverse-engineered from captured Iranian technology.
"We are moving to a new phase where we don't need to risk high-exquisite assets for every mission," Hegseth stated. "For every Reaper they might hit, we are launching hundreds of low-cost systems that are already dismantling their infrastructure."
