Russell Crowe Releases Emotional Cover of "Waltzing Matilda" in Tribute to Young Bondi Victim Matilda | LISTEN
Crowe's stripped-back version features his signature gravelly vocals over gentle guitar, evoking the bush ballad's themes of loss and resilience. The track is available for free download on his official website, with donations encouraged to support victims' families and anti-hate initiatives.

Academy Award-winning actor and musician Russell Crowe has released a heartfelt acoustic cover of Australia's unofficial anthem, "Waltzing Matilda," as a tribute to 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim of the tragic Bondi Beach mass shooting on December 14.
The Gladiator star, known for his deep connection to Australian culture and his own musical pursuits, shared the recording on social media late Sunday night, following the emotional "Light Over Darkness" vigil at Bondi Beach where thousands gathered to mourn the 15 victims of the antisemitic attack during a Hanukkah celebration.
In a poignant caption accompanying the release, Crowe wrote: "For little Matilda and her family, whose lives were forever changed in an instant. This song, with its wandering spirit and enduring hope, feels right for her name and for our nation in grief. Rest in peace, sweet girl. Australia weeps with you."
The release comes just days after vigils across Sydney honored the victims, including young Matilda, named by her Ukrainian-born parents as "the most Australian name they knew." During Sunday's commemoration, mourners sang "Waltzing Matilda" in her memory, a moment that moved many to tears, including Matilda's parents who danced slowly together amid the crowd.
Crowe, a long-time resident of Australia and vocal supporter of national causes, has previously performed folk-inspired music with his bands and solo projects. Fans have praised the cover for its raw emotion, with many calling it a fitting national balm during this time of mourning.
Proceeds from any voluntary contributions will go toward the Australian Jewish community's recovery efforts and enhanced security for public events.
The Bondi tragedy, Australia's deadliest shooting in decades, has prompted nationwide calls for stronger gun laws and measures against rising antisemitism.
