Several people were killed and others injured after an explosion ripped through a crowded bar in the Swiss ski resort town of Crans-Montana early Thursday, as New Year’s Eve celebrations were underway, police said.

The blast occurred at around 1:30 a.m. local time at the Constellation Bar, a popular nightlife venue in the upscale Alpine resort. Swiss police said the cause of the explosion remains unknown and that casualty figures are still being confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Valais Cantonal Police told the BBC that authorities could not yet give an exact death toll, saying only that “several” people were killed. Another official update is expected shortly.

Unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show flames inside the building, with emergency services and bystanders gathered outside. Police said they are working to verify the footage. Swiss media reported that fireworks used during a concert may have caused the fire, but officials stressed that this has not been confirmed.

The explosion triggered panic in the resort, which was packed with locals and tourists celebrating the arrival of the new year. Witnesses described confusion and chaos as people fled the bar and nearby streets filled with fire engines, ambulances and police vehicles. A helpline has been established for families seeking information about those who may have been inside at the time.

Emergency services responded quickly, with firefighters battling the blaze and paramedics treating the injured before transporting them to hospitals in the region. Authorities have not yet said how many people were hospitalized or how serious their injuries are.

Police said investigators are examining the scene and considering multiple possible causes, including an accident related to pyrotechnics or other technical failures. They urged the public to avoid speculation until the investigation advances.

The incident cast a somber shadow over New Year’s celebrations in the region, as officials said further details would be released once confirmed.
