A near-collision incident at Sydney Airport, Australia's busiest aviation hub, narrowly avoided a serious crash when a Jetstar Airbus A320 performed emergency braking to avoid striking a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 being towed across an active taxiway.
The incident occurred while the Jetstar aircraft was taxiing for a scheduled flight to the Gold Coast under Air Traffic Control instructions. Pilots identified the Qatar Airways jet crossing dangerously close to their flight path and executed emergency braking procedures.
The sudden stop injured a cabin crew member aboard the Jetstar flight, who required immediate paramedic treatment at the airport. The emergency stop also caused damage to the connection between the Qatar Airways 777's nose gear and its towing tug.
Massive Operational Disruption
The incident triggered severe operational chaos at Sydney Airport. Over 120 flights experienced significant disruptions as a result of the near-miss. Passengers aboard affected aircraft were stranded on the tarmac for more than one hour while airport authorities investigated the incident and cleared the taxiway.
The disruption affected both departing and arriving flights, creating cascading delays across Australia's busiest airport system.
