Driver, 80, Plows into Crowded Sidewalk in Argentina; 13 Injured, Including Baby

Security cameras captured alarming moments in the city of Cerrillos, Argentina, when an 80-year-old driver mounted a sidewalk with his vehicle and struck a group of pedestrians standing outside several shops. At least 13 people were injured in the crash, among them a one-year-old baby.

The footage shows people falling from the force of the impact, with some trapped beneath the vehicle. Nine adults and four children were injured, including children aged 5 and 11 who were hospitalized and later released.

Passersby rushed to the scene to assist the victims and extract the children. One witness, who identified himself as Emilio, said they had to lift the vehicle to free another child. According to him, the accident occurred in a heavily urban area where vehicles travel at high speeds.

A breathalyzer test administered to the driver came back negative, Argentine authorities reported, but at this stage no explanation has been given for what caused him to mount the sidewalk. One witness raised the possibility that the driver fainted during the incident.

According to the witness, despite the severity of the crash, the incident could have ended far worse. "It could have been a tragedy," he concluded.
