Antisemitic Assault in St. Petersburg: Jewish Teen Badly Beaten Over Israeli Flag Profile Photo
This is what it is to be a Jew anywhere in the world, in 2025. What a scary and sad state of affairs.

In a disturbing incident highlighting rising antisemitic assaults, a 15-year-old Jewish student was viciously attacked at his school earlier this month for displaying an Israeli flag in his social media profile picture. The assault, which involved threats laced with Holocaust references, has sparked widespread media attention in Russia and prompted an official investigation into possible motives of national or ethnic hatred.
The victim, a student at a local school in St. Petersburg, became the target of harassment after changing his Telegram profile photo to include the Israeli flag. The conflict began in early December when a classmate, referred to under the pseudonym "Sergei," confronted him over the image. Sergei, who reportedly holds extreme nationalist views, threatened the boy and hurled antisemitic insults, including references to the Holocaust, according to reports.
The situation escalated when the victim was lured to the school's restroom area by Sergei and an older student. There, the attackers blocked the exit and demanded that the boy kneel and apologize for the flag. When he refused, they repeatedly struck him in the face.
The boy sustained severe injuries, including a fractured eye socket, specifically the orbital bone, which required immediate hospitalization and surgery under general anesthesia to remove bone fragments as reported by Ynet.
He spent over a week in the hospital and is now continuing recovery through outpatient care. Doctors have advised a transition to home-based schooling for his safety, a recommendation currently under discussion with school administrators.
The incident has left the teen traumatized, forcing him out of his regular educational environment amid fears of further reprisals.
The boy's mother promptly filed a complaint with local police, leading to an official review by Russia's Investigative Committee. Regional authorities are also examining the case, with preliminary indications pointing to antisemitism as the driving factor. While no arrests have been reported as of yet, the probe is ongoing, and calls for justice have echoed across Russian media outlets.
This attack occurs against a backdrop of increasing antisemitic incidents worldwide, including in Russia, where Jewish communities have reported heightened harassment since the escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. Globally, organizations like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) have documented a surge in such events; for instance, over 8,800 antisemitic incidents were reported in the United States alone in the first 11 months of a recent year, underscoring a troubling trend that experts attribute to online radicalization and geopolitical tensions.
In Russia, similar cases have included vandalism of synagogues and online threats against Jewish individuals, though official statistics remain limited.
Advocates are urging swift action to prevent escalation, emphasizing the need for educational programs on tolerance in schools.
