Echoes of the 1930s: Kyrgyz Hotel Bans "Jews and Animals"

International outrage erupts after the Villa Hotel in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, displayed a sign equating Jews with animals. Following a strong condemnation from Israel, local authorities have removed the antisemitic display and launched a criminal investigation into the owners.

A hotel in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh has sparked international condemnation after a discriminatory sign reading “Jews and animals are not allowed” was displayed at its entrance.

The sign, posted at the Villa Hotel, appeared in Kyrgyz, Russian, and English. It featured crossed-out images of a dog and the Star of David, equating Jews with animals in a clear antisemitic message.

A guest photographed the sign and shared it on social media in recent days, triggering widespread outrage online and in international media. The hotel reportedly opened just three weeks ago.

Israel’s Embassy to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan issued a strong statement condemning the incident.

“The Embassy... strongly condemns the appearance of a sign... containing [an] openly antisemitic and offensive statement. Such manifestations are unacceptable and contradict the fundamental principles of respect, equality, and human dignity,” the embassy said.

Kyrgyz authorities responded quickly. On April 20, police in Osh received a report from the Service for Countering Extremism and Illegal Migration and launched a preliminary investigation into the discriminatory sign.

Hotel management claimed the sign was installed by the building’s owner, from whom they rent the premises, and that they had objected to it. They stated the sign was removed following discussions with law enforcement.

According to Israel’s ambassador, the matter has now been resolved. The antisemitic sign has been taken down, and Kyrgyz authorities have opened a criminal investigation against those responsible.
