Hollywood Controversy

Paramount Slams Ruffalo Over Antisemitism

Hollywood studio issues sharp rebuke after Marvel star accused company owners of enabling "genocide" in post criticizing planned Warner Bros. merger

Paramount Pictures issued a sharp public statement Saturday condemning actor Mark Ruffalo after he published a social media post accusing the studio's owners of "empowering some of the most destructive and inhumane forces in the world." The accusation came in response to the planned acquisition of Warner Bros. studios by Paramount.

In an official statement, a Paramount spokesperson said: "We are concerned when antisemitic stereotypes are allegedly used in the context of a business dispute." The statement continued: "Words like 'genocide' and 'apartheid,' when attributed to a corporate transaction, are not just wrong, they cross every line, and they cheapen the very real suffering that these words were meant to describe."

Ruffalo, best known for playing the Hulk in Marvel films, posted a video to Instagram on Friday featuring Safra Catz, a member of Paramount's board of directors. In the clip, Catz discusses what she describes as "very scary technologies" that Oracle Corporation allegedly used to assist the Israeli military following the events of October 7.

The actor labeled Larry Ellison, Oracle's founder and one of Paramount's major shareholders, a "classic oligarch," and warned against the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. studios, which is being pursued by Ellison's son David. Referring to Catz's video, Ruffalo urged his followers to "look at how she talks about what we now understand to be genocide, built on an apartheid system of oppression that is being carried out through Oracle."

Paramount's statement went on to say: "This does not justify responding in kind, and to be clear, we do not tolerate prejudice of any kind against any person." The company added that "this simply exposes the real motive of some of those who have opposed this deal."

Ruffalo was among the first Hollywood figures to publicly oppose the proposed Warner Bros.-Paramount merger. The actor was previously part of the Artists4Ceasefire group, which called for a ceasefire in Gaza, and was seen wearing a support pin at the most recent Academy Awards ceremony.

Paramount concluded its statement with a relatively conciliatory message: "This brings us to a moment where we need to lower the flames, not raise them. We prefer to build rather than continue to be dragged into such rhetoric."

The company emphasized its commitment to "excellent content" alongside "acceptance of every story, every creator, and no blacklists, no exceptions, for anyone." The clear message: Paramount will not yield to political pressure regarding its choice of creators and content.

This is not the first time Ruffalo has sparked controversy regarding Israel. He has a years-long history of activism against Israel, describing it as a form of "apartheid" in 2020 and accusing it of genocide in 2021, though he apologized for the genocide accusation, calling it "inaccurate, inflammatory, disrespectful & is being used to justify antisemitism here & abroad."

Despite that apology, Ruffalo has continued his 'advocacy' for Palestine, characterizing what's happening in Gaza as "inhumane" and most recently criticizing corporate connections to Israel. His activism has sparked backlash from critics who claim his focus on Gaza while ignoring Hamas's attacks exemplifies antisemitism, with many accusing him of stoking anti-Jewish hatred under the guise of humanitarianism.
