Ontario police announced Tuesday evening that Sean Ward, the suspect who opened fire near the Bnei Yaakov synagogue in Belleville, Canada, on Yom Kippur eve, has died from his wounds in hospital. The attack occurred two days earlier.
Authorities also provided an update on Officer Jeff Smith, who confronted Ward at the scene. While his condition has stabilized, police emphasized he remains seriously wounded.
The shooting unfolded while congregants were praying inside the synagogue. Smith encountered the 29-year-old Ward at an intersection where the synagogue is located, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Smith sustained serious injuries while Ward was critically wounded, now confirmed fatal.
Police reported that between 20 and 30 rounds were fired at the scene, with several bullets striking the synagogue's windows. Approximately 25 worshippers were inside the building during the attack, but none were injured.
