A rare public confrontation erupted Tuesday between two Likud Members of Knesset, exposing deepening fractures within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's party over the contentious yeshiva draft immunity bill and questions of party loyalty.

MK Dan Illouz sharply criticized fellow Likud lawmaker Ofir Katz during a heated exchange in the Knesset, accusing him of viewing Israeli politics solely through the lens of coalition versus opposition dynamics rather than adhering to core Likud principles. The clash came as Illouz has refused to support the draft immunity legislation, arguing it perpetuates draft evasion among the ultra-Orthodox community.

"Instead of looking at the entire world only from the perspective of coalition and opposition, I recommend you look at Likud's values," Illouz declared, according to reports from Srugim News.

Katz responded with a blistering counterattack, accusing Illouz of repeatedly undermining both Netanyahu and the party itself. "What are you talking about? Dan, anyone who follows your statements sees that you are constantly speaking against Likud and against Prime Minister Netanyahu, and not just on the draft issue and not just on the Haredi issue," Katz fired back.

The confrontation escalated further when Katz questioned Illouz's long-term commitment to the party. "You need to be here 30 years to do the legislation I've done for IDF soldiers. No one knows what your next party will be. You're doing this to attack Likud," he stated.

The public clash signals mounting internal pressure within Likud as Netanyahu faces challenges from multiple directions. The party has recently witnessed the departure of veteran figures, including former Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, who announced he would not compete in Likud primaries and instead launch a new political movement. Political observers have noted Netanyahu's growing concern over centrist, statesmanlike figures abandoning the party.

The dispute comes as the Knesset prepares for a critical voting marathon on the yeshiva draft immunity bill, which would grant full immunity from arrest, investigation, and enforcement measures to yeshiva students and kollel scholars. The legislation, structured as a temporary order effective until November 30, 2026, has sparked fierce debate both within the coalition and across Israeli society.

Illouz's refusal to support the bill places him at odds with the coalition's Haredi parties, who view the measure as essential protection for Torah study. His stance has drawn accusations from coalition allies that he is prioritizing personal political positioning over party unity at a critical juncture.

The confrontation underscores broader tensions within Likud as Netanyahu navigates competing pressures from his coalition partners, internal party dynamics, and public opinion on the draft issue. With the party facing potential primary elections and growing speculation about Netanyahu's control over the movement, Tuesday's clash revealed fault lines that extend far beyond the immediate legislative battle.

Neither Illouz nor Katz issued further public statements following the exchange. The draft immunity bill is expected to advance to its second and third readings in the coming days, setting the stage for additional confrontations within the fractured coalition.
