Fugitive Arrested at Ben Gurion Airport After Five Years on the Run

A fugitive who fled Israel in 2021 to avoid serving a prison sentence was arrested Wednesday upon his return to the country, ending a years-long effort to bring him to justice. The man had left Israel approximately three months before he was scheduled to begin his incarceration and remained abroad for roughly three years.

The arrest was carried out by the Barkai Unit of the Israel Prison Service, a specialized division responsible for supervising service operations and tracking down fugitives. According to the Prison Service spokesperson, security personnel at Ben Gurion International Airport alerted the unit to the fugitive's arrival, and he was taken into custody immediately upon landing.

Following coordination with police authorities, the detainee was transferred to the Rishon LeZion police station for processing. Investigators from the Barkai Unit's central branch then took custody of the prisoner and transported him to the Tel Aviv detention facility, where he will now serve his sentence behind bars.

Throughout the years he spent abroad, authorities made numerous attempts to locate the fugitive, but he successfully evaded capture until his return to Israel ended the three-year pursuit. The Barkai Unit, which operates within the Prison Service's Alternatives to Incarceration and Supervision Division, stated it will continue working determinedly to locate prison evaders and ensure they serve their sentences as part of strengthening the correctional system's authority.

This case joins a series of successful fugitive captures in recent years. Several months ago, French authorities apprehended a prisoner who had escaped from an Israeli facility in an unusual manner—by hiding in a laundry bag belonging to a fellow inmate who was being released. In the United States, authorities captured a murderer who had escaped from prison by scaling walls, following a manhunt that lasted several days.
