Mount Olympus, Greece

The body of Ami Yogev, a 46-year-old Israeli from Modi'in, was recovered on Mount Olympus in Greece on Friday, seventeen days after he was last seen. Initial findings indicate he likely fell from a significant height, Greek authorities said.

Greek media reported that Yogev's body was found in the Mavrolokos stream area, at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters above sea level. Fire and rescue teams reached the site to extract the body under difficult terrain conditions.

A rescue delegation from the Israeli volunteer organization Chevrim Mechatzlim located Yogev's body. "We are very active in the field," the organization said. "Our volunteer team is working in challenging conditions and preparing for darkness."

Israel's Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing "deep sorrow over the death of the Israeli citizen who was located in Greece, and shares in the heavy grief of the family. Since receiving the report of his disappearance, the Israeli consulate in Greece and the Department for Israelis Abroad in the Consular Division of the Foreign Ministry have worked continuously and with great effort, with various parties in Israel and Greece, in order to assist in locating him. Throughout the entire period, Foreign Ministry representatives maintained ongoing contact with the family members, accompanied them and assisted as much as possible."

"Even now, after his location, the consulate and the Department for Israelis Abroad continue to accompany the family and work in coordination with the relevant authorities in Greece and Israel, in order to complete the required procedures and bring the deceased for burial in Israel as soon as possible," the ministry added. "The Foreign Ministry will continue to stand by the family and assist them in their difficult time until he is brought for burial in Israel."

Yogev's last contact with family was on September 20, when he sent his mother photographs from his hike on Mount Olympus. Four hours later, his mother sent a message asking if he had arrived, and he saw the message but did not reply.

The family later reported that Ami's rental car was found in the parking lot before the trail, alongside his suitcase, bag and computer. According to his mother, Ami left Israel without travel insurance, and as a result the private searches were funded out of pocket, with the family opening a crowdfunding campaign to finance the rescue teams.
