Lakewood Yeshiva Drowning: Student Critical After Pool Incident

A 24-year-old yeshiva student is fighting for his life in a New Jersey hospital after a drowning incident on Sunday. The young man, a student at Beth Medrash Govoha (BMG) in Lakewood, was rushed to a local medical center in critical condition following the pool accident.

According to local news site Lakewood Alerts, the student was evacuated in life-threatening condition after being pulled from a swimming pool. He remains sedated and on a ventilator in the intensive care unit. Following rabbinic guidance, the name Baruch has been added to his original name—a traditional practice believed to aid in healing—and the community has been asked to pray for Daniel Baruch ben Hadassah Orit.

The incident occurred Sunday at a swimming pool when the student encountered distress in the water and went under. Emergency medical teams responded to the scene and performed extended life-saving measures before transporting him rapidly to the local medical center.

Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood is one of the largest and most prominent yeshivas in the United States, with thousands of students. News of the drowning sent waves of concern through the institution's study halls and the broader community.

Friends and acquaintances have mobilized to recite Mishnayot, make personal commitments to good deeds, and maintain round-the-clock prayer shifts in hopes of a miracle and full recovery. Lakewood's haredi community, known for its solidarity and mutual support, has rallied with full force on behalf of the young student.

The incident comes against the backdrop of several recent drowning tragedies in the Orthodox community during the current break period between study sessions. Just days ago, four-year-old Shalom Saginer, grandson of prominent rabbi Shalom Arush, died following a pool drowning during a family vacation in Mexico. Additionally, a 12-year-old haredi boy died after his boat capsized in the Jordan River near Yesod HaMa'alah in northern Israel.
