Bull Bison Hurls Yellowstone Tourist 8 Feet Into the Air

A tourist was seriously injured Friday evening after an aggressive bull bison charged him and tossed him roughly eight feet into the air at Yellowstone National Park's Bridge Bay Campground, south of Fishing Bridge, Wyoming.

The attack was captured on video by Mike MacLeod, a professional photographer from Bozeman, Montana, who was camping in the area when his wife spotted the bull entering the campground. MacLeod said the animal appeared angry and agitated, charging at anything in its path, and he began filming from a safe distance.

According to MacLeod, the victim, an older man, was walking with his grandson when the bison first charged a group of children taking photos nearby before turning its aggression toward the truck of a passing driver. The bison then set its sights on the man and his grandson, who had moved behind some trees after the animal began to rise from where it had been resting. MacLeod said the pair had kept what appeared to be a safe distance of roughly 100 yards before the attack, well beyond the National Park Service's own guidelines, and that the man did nothing to provoke the animal.

The bison hooked the man with its horn and threw him into the air, where he completed a full flip before landing on his side. Bystanders, including MacLeod, shouted and moved toward the animal to drive it away from the injured man before it eventually left the area. Yellowstone emergency medical crews arrived and administered first aid before the man was transported to a hospital.

The man's grandson said he sustained significant injuries, including a broken hip, and remained in serious condition as of Sunday. The National Park Service has not released additional details on the incident or the identity of the victim.

The attack occurred as Yellowstone enters its annual bison rut, which typically runs from mid-July through late August and is known to make bull bison especially aggressive. It marks at least the second bison-related injury reported in the park so far this year, following an incident in June in which a 12-year-old was hurt near Mud Volcano.
