Outrage in Ashdod After Video Shows Violent Arrest of Hasidic Man Released Without Apology | DISTRUBING FOOTAGE

Video shows a Gur hasid violently detained in Ashdod in a case of mistaken identity; police and eyewitnesses give conflicting accounts.

Police violently arrest Gur Hasid, claim 'mistaken identity'

A disturbing incident in the heart of Ashdod's Haredi Quarter 7 neighborhood on Sunday morning has left the local ultra-Orthodox community shocked and angry, after a married man from the Gur Hasidic community was violently detained by police in what officers later described as a case of mistaken identity.

The incident took place on Shderot Yerushalayim near Rechov Ba'al HaNes. According to witness accounts relayed to Kikar HaShabbat, police officers identified the man, who they apparently believed was a deserter from military service. Witnesses said the man, startled by the encounter, tried to move away, at which point officers moved to restrain him with significant force.

Eyewitnesses described a violent scene playing out on the street, saying the man was handcuffed at his hands and feet and struck repeatedly. According to their accounts, his glasses were broken and his pants torn during the encounter, and he sustained injuries that left him bleeding in several places. Bystanders said they were stunned to witness the scene unfolding in their own neighborhood.

Only after he had already been restrained and injured, witnesses said, did officers determine that the man was not who they believed him to be. According to the accounts relayed to Kikar HaShabbat, officers removed his handcuffs and left the scene quickly without offering an apology or medical assistance.

A police source offered a different account of the incident, saying the man was not beaten and was detained after refusing to identify himself during an enforcement operation connected to a court order, adding that the entire incident could have been avoided had he identified himself, and that officers and a community liaison officer apologized to him.

United Torah Judaism chairman MK Yitzhak Goldknopf responded to the video, saying the footage from Ashdod should trouble anyone responsible for law enforcement. He said it is unacceptable for someone to be violently arrested, handcuffed and humiliated in public, only for the matter to be treated as though nothing happened once the mistake becomes clear. Goldknopf added that he has no doubt the treatment of the man reflects a broader public climate that has made the observant community a target, and he called on the national security minister and Israel Police to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation, hold the responsible officers accountable, and ensure such incidents are not repeated.

Israel Police issued a general statement in response to press inquiries, saying the operation was carried out under a judicial order as part of an ongoing investigation. According to the statement, an individual was identified who began fleeing the scene and refused to identify himself, and it was later determined that this was a case of mistaken identity, after which he was released at the scene. Police said the incident has been referred for review by the relevant authorities, who will draw the necessary conclusions, and expressed regret over the distress and anguish caused, adding that the force remains committed to safeguarding citizens' rights.
