The newly opened Chongqing East railway station in southwestern China could easily be mistaken for a massive airport terminal based on photographs alone. Instead, it represents one of the most ambitious rail infrastructure projects completed in recent years.

According to local authorities, the station covers approximately 1.22 million square meters in total floor area, making it the world's largest railway station by that measure. To put the scale in perspective, officials compare the space to roughly 170 football fields. The facility rises eight stories and features 15 platforms serving 29 tracks. At peak capacity, the station is designed to accommodate approximately 16,000 passengers per hour.

Chongqing ranks among China's most mountainous cities, and its challenging topography created significant engineering obstacles for the project. Rather than selecting flat terrain, engineers were required to dramatically reshape the landscape and construct the complex in a hilly area. Construction reportedly took only 38 months to complete. The entire project carried an estimated price tag of $7.8 billion. Planners designed the station to function as a major transportation hub integrating high-speed rail, conventional trains, urban metro lines, buses, and other municipal transit services. The station's footprint illustrates just how exceptional this project is—various sources estimate it is five to six times larger than New York's Grand Central Terminal.

The facility was conceived as part of a "station-city" model that directly integrates transportation infrastructure into the urban fabric. According to authorities, the complex combines high-speed rail, conventional rail, urban metro lines, public transit, and commercial functions. This design aims to allow passengers to transfer between different modes of transportation without leaving the facility.

The station's distinctive design draws inspiration from Chongqing's natural landscape. The structure incorporates tree-like columns and skylights resembling water droplets, reflecting an effort to incorporate characteristics of the "mountain city" into the massive building. The numbers are expected to grow further: according to plans, the station is intended to become one of the central nodes in southwestern China's high-speed rail network, connecting Chongqing to major cities and regions throughout the country.
