The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced an immediate diplomatic response after two Iranian diplomats stationed in Paris were declared persona non grata, ordering their departure within days. The decision comes as a direct countermeasure to the assault and temporary detention of two French embassy staff members in Tehran last month, an incident Paris described as a deliberate and intolerable violation of international norms.
The diplomatic spat originated on July 19, when Iranian security forces intercepted two French embassy employees in Tehran, holding them for several hours without allowing contact with relatives or diplomatic officials. Following their release and return to France, Iranian authorities declared the French personnel persona non grata, accusing them of actions violating diplomatic protocols.
French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot addressed the situation in a public statement, placing the escalation within the broader context of regional instability and domestic conditions inside Iran. "The Iranian people, a great people, are the main victims of this period of extreme tension in the Middle East, caught in a vice between the violent suppression of protests in January 2026 and military bombardments," Barrot stated.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that the attack on French personnel was directly tied to France's position on civil rights and academic freedom in the region. "It is precisely because France stands alongside the Iranian people and supports its artists, scientists, and researchers that two French diplomats were scandalously and deliberately assaulted on July 19," he stated, adding, "I declared that this intolerable act would have consequences, and so it has: two Iranian diplomats stationed in France will be expelled in the coming days."
The expulsion order follows weeks of heightened friction between Paris and Tehran over diplomatic immunity and foreign interference allegations. French officials summoned the Iranian ambassador in Paris to formally communicate the expulsion decision, rejecting Iranian accusations against the embassy staff as unfounded.
