After hours of speculation following the landing of a large American cargo aircraft in Moscow, U.S. officials confirmed that CIA Director John Ratcliffe had arrived in the Russian capital on Tuesday for a series of meetings with local security and law enforcement officials.
This marks the first visit by the head of American intelligence to Moscow since November 2021, when Ratcliffe's predecessor William Burns traveled to the city. That earlier visit took place just months before Russia launched its military campaign in Ukraine.
Ratcliffe's trip comes just one day after Washington issued warnings to various nations about continuing commercial relationships with Iran. The United States made clear that non-compliance would result in the imposition of secondary sanctions, part of a broader effort to intensify economic pressure on Tehran.
Russia maintains a close strategic partnership with Iran that includes extensive military and diplomatic ties. While Tehran has supplied Moscow with unmanned aerial vehicles, Ukrainian officials have previously claimed that Russia is transferring comparable technology and satellite assistance to Iran.
An American convoy of armored vehicles, escorted by local police forces, was observed moving through Moscow. According to assessments, the senior American official brought the security convoy with him on the cargo plane, which explains the need for such a large transport aircraft.
