“horrific mass shooting”

Deadly Shooting in Kraków as Poland’s Political Crisis Deepens

A gunman firing from a car killed at least five people in Kraków’s Main Market Square, as Poland’s fight over its top court and judiciary escalated

At least five people were killed and more than a dozen injured on Saturday when a gunman opened fire from a moving car in the Main Market Square of Kraków, Poland’s second-largest city, according to local authorities. Initial reports put the toll at two dead and ten injured. Police said the suspect was shot and arrested. Two police officers were among the injured.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was receiving updates from the interior minister and that police were investigating the background and circumstances of the attack.

The shooting comes amid an escalating political battle over Poland’s judiciary. On October 30, Constitutional Tribunal judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended the court’s president, Bogdan Święczkowski, and its vice president, Bartłomiej Sochański, for one month, deepening the dispute between Tusk’s pro-European government and the conservative camp over judicial appointments and independence. President Karol Nawrocki opposes recognizing the new appointments, while the government argues that the proper functioning of state institutions must be restored.

Separately, an opposition attempt to impeach Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński failed. In a parliamentary vote, 212 lawmakers supported the motion and 235 opposed it. It was the third attempt to impeach Kierwiński during the current parliament’s term.
