El-Sayed Calls Michigan the “Capital of Arab America,” Sparking Backlash | WATCH

Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed described his state as the “capital of Arab America” during remarks on Friday at the Connect Arab America Empowerment Summit in Chantilly, Virginia.

“I’m honored to be the next United States Senator from the great state of Michigan,” El-Sayed said. “I know we’re here in D.C., which of course is the capital of the United States of America, but Michigan is the capital of Arab America.”

The remark referred to the large Arab American community in Metro Detroit, particularly Dearborn, often described as the first majority-Arab American city in the United States. Michigan is home to an estimated 400,000 Arab Americans.

The comment sparked debate online and drew criticism from conservatives, who argued that a senator should represent all of his constituents rather than an ethnic community. Radio host Mark Levin responded on X by calling El-Sayed “a cocky little bastard with grand designs” and a “jihadi,” and urged that he be kept in the public eye so “the rest of America will wake the hell up.”

El-Sayed, a 42-year-old Democrat and former public health official in Detroit and Wayne County, was born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents. He defeated Republican Mike Rogers on Tuesday to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. His large margins in Dearborn and other Arab American communities, which had shifted toward President Donald Trump in 2024, were a significant factor in his victory.

He ran as a progressive, campaigning on Medicare for All, reducing corporate money in politics, and opposition to the Iran war and U.S. military support for Israel. He has repeatedly accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. In an interview with NPR on Wednesday, he said Trump was right to end U.S. military aid to Israel, and he called for American arms sales to Israel to be halted as well.

In a recent appearance on the Pod Save America podcast, El-Sayed defended a more combative style for Democrats, saying there is a responsibility to engage with Trump “as the unserious fool that he is” and comparing the president to a bully who grows stronger if no one confronts him.
