The School Controversy

Modi'in Illit Parents Rage Over School Assignment

Residents of Gan Hadasim neighborhood protest city's plan to allocate new 1,000-student facility to girls from outside the area • Local daughters still bused to distant schools despite neighborhood growth | 'My heart skips a beat every morning' (Haredim)

New School Building in Modi'in Illit

A storm is brewing in the Gan Hadasim neighborhood of Modi'in Illit, where residents are mounting fierce opposition to what they describe as an absurd municipal decision that prioritizes students from outside the area over their own daughters.

According to residents who spoke to Kikar HaShabbat, the city is planning to allocate a newly constructed educational facility — designed to accommodate approximately 1,000 students — to girls from outside the neighborhood, even as local families continue sending their daughters on daily bus journeys to distant schools across the city.

The neighborhood, which has grown to house between 1,200 and 2,000 families, lacks adequate local educational infrastructure despite the significant population expansion. The new building, constructed in the heart of the residential area, was widely expected by residents to serve their own children. Instead, they claim, the municipality intends to assign it to students from other parts of Modi'in Illit or surrounding areas.

Traffic Chaos and Safety Fears

Residents warn that the decision will trigger a daily influx of hundreds of vehicles, buses, and shuttle services into the already congested neighborhood, while their own daughters continue the reverse commute out of the area each morning.

Rachel D., a mother of three girls, described the daily ordeal in stark terms. "Every morning is a nerve-wracking nightmare," she stated. "Instead of my daughters walking safely from our home to a building constructed right next to us, I'm forced to send them on a long journey to another neighborhood. They have to cross major roads and busy intersections. My heart skips a beat every single day until I know they've arrived safely."

She added bitterly: "They promised us a neighborhood suited for families, but in practice they're completely ignoring the most basic safety needs of our own children."

Yossi K., a neighborhood resident and member of the newly formed action committee, warned that the area is already struggling with severe traffic congestion. "Our neighborhood is already on the verge of a transportation meltdown," he declared. "The streets are narrow, parking is at capacity, and during morning hours we have gridlock that paralyzes the entire area. The idea of pumping in daily shuttle buses and private vehicles carrying students from outside is a complete disconnect from reality on the ground."

Petition Drive and Municipal Silence

Yossi emphasized that residents harbor no animosity toward any particular community. "We're not opposed to any group," he clarified. "But an educational institution built in the heart of our neighborhood should first and foremost serve the children of this neighborhood, not create deliberate traffic chaos."

In recent days, residents have launched a petition drive, collecting signatures on a formal letter of protest against the municipal decision. The action committee plans to submit the petition to city officials and planning authorities, demanding that the educational facility be reassigned to serve local students.

The controversy echoes broader tensions in Israel's rapidly expanding haredi cities, where educational infrastructure struggles to keep pace with population growth. Modi'in Illit, one of the country's fastest-growing municipalities, has faced repeated challenges in providing adequate schools and kindergartens for its burgeoning population.

Kikar HaShabbat reached out to Modi'in Illit municipality for comment on the residents' allegations and the planned allocation of the new school building. As of publication, city officials have declined to respond and have not provided any statement addressing the controversy.

The silence from municipal authorities has only intensified residents' frustration, with many viewing it as confirmation that the city intends to proceed with the contested assignment despite local opposition.
