Houthis Launch Missile and Drone Barrage on Mocha Port, Killing 7, Wounding 30

Yemen's Houthi forces launched a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones at the Red Sea port city of Mocha, killing at least 7 people and wounding 30 others, with Yemeni air defenses intercepting 11 drones.

Houthis attack Mocha Port

Yemen's Houthi forces launched a large-scale attack on the Red Sea port city of Mocha on August 9, striking with ballistic missiles and drones and killing at least seven people—four military personnel and three civilians—with 30 others wounded, according to Yemeni military statements.

Yemeni air defenses intercepted 11 Houthi drones during the attack, the military said. Footage broadcast by Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah television showed the launch of multiple ballistic missiles and drones, with Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claiming in a Telegram post that the operation targeted Saudi troop concentrations and weapons depots in the strategically important port.

The attack represents a resumed assault on Mocha, a coastal city in Taiz Province located near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and a major route for international shipping. The port and surrounding areas are controlled by forces aligned with Yemen's internationally recognized government, supported by the Saudi-led coalition.

The Houthis said the operation was launched in retaliation for what they described as continued Saudi military buildup and drone incursions into the airspace of Saada and Hajjah, two Houthi-held provinces in northern Yemen along the Saudi border. Houthi political council member Hizam al-Assad claimed that persistent explosions and fires visible from the port were caused by large quantities of weapons and military equipment stored there.

The assault on Mocha was not isolated. The attack came less than 24 hours after an earlier barrage struck the same city, killing at least 11 additional people, according to Al Jazeera reporting. The escalation also extended beyond Mocha to the al-Khokha district south of the coastal city of Hodeidah, indicating a broader coordinated campaign across Yemen's western coast.

Yemeni military statements said the Houthi attacks targeted both civilian infrastructure and military installations, with Mocha's residential neighborhoods coming under fire. Local government officials told news agencies that Houthis fired missiles at the port targeting civilian areas within the facility, with residents reporting multiple explosions and smoke rising over the city.

The strikes are part of a pattern of Houthi military operations against government-held areas and Saudi-backed forces in western Yemen. The Iran-aligned Houthi movement has sustained a campaign of missile and drone attacks since the Gaza war began in October 2023, initially claiming operations in solidarity with Palestinians and later targeting regional military installations and government positions.

The Red Sea attacks represent a persistent challenge for international maritime traffic and reflect the ongoing instability in Yemen's civil conflict, where Houthi forces control significant northern territory while government forces and Saudi-led coalition partners maintain control of coastal areas and the south.
