In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi said: "Captain Matchachar is a hero. In the face of enormous danger, and despite being seriously wounded, he showed tremendous courage and unwavering determination to protect the lives of others."
Modi emphasized the miraculous nature of the outcome and the pilot's quick thinking: "His bravery helped save hundreds of lives and prevent a major disaster. India is proud of Captain Matchachar. We are praying for his speedy recovery."
The Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia reported Wednesday evening that the medical condition of the Indian pilot injured in the attempted cockpit takeover is stable, and he continues to receive medical treatment at a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Indian diplomatic officials in Saudi Arabia said their representatives are closely monitoring developments and awaiting a full and detailed medical report on Matchachar's condition. The embassy is in direct contact with the pilot's family and is accompanying them throughout the recovery and treatment process with local authorities.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted on X Wednesday evening: "I salute the Indian pilot, Captain Samit Matchachar, for his extraordinary courage. Despite being stabbed and seriously wounded, he fought back forcefully, opened the cockpit door and enabled passengers and crew to subdue the attacker, thereby preventing a major aviation disaster. He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and citizens of other countries. I wish Captain Matchachar a speedy and full recovery. He is a true hero."
The pilot has 15 years of aviation experience. During the struggle, Matchachar was wounded, apparently by the emergency axe that was in the cockpit. Despite his injuries, Matchachar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to break in and overpower the co-pilot, who is suspected of attempting to crash the aircraft.
