U.S.-Iran Tensions

Iran Dismisses Trump Sanctions as Ineffective

Parliament speaker and finance minister reject Washington's economic pressure campaign, saying trade partners remain committed despite U.S. threats

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran's parliament, issued a defiant statement late Monday dismissing American threats and portraying Washington as internationally isolated. His remarks came in response to sweeping new sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on Iran, part of what officials termed an "economic D-Day."

"The Americans know that no one believes their boasts," Ghalibaf wrote in an official statement. He argued that the United States lacks the economic standing to further reduce its relationships with other nations.

According to the parliamentary speaker, Iran's trading partners have communicated—both through media channels and direct messages—that they do not take American statements seriously.

Iran's Finance Minister Ali Madanizadeh joined the pushback, announcing that Tehran has prepared comprehensive measures to counter American economic pressure. "We have prepared steps to deal with American pressures," the minister stated, adding that "American sanctions will fail this time in their attempt to sever our economic arteries, just as they failed in the past."

The coordinated messaging from senior Iranian officials suggests a strategy of projecting confidence in the face of renewed U.S. economic warfare.

The Iranian statements follow an unprecedented American economic offensive. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that the sanctions target approximately 60 entities, individuals, and vessels connected to Iran, focusing on five key sectors: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping.

The scope of the measures represents one of the most comprehensive sanction packages directed at Iran's economy in recent years.
