Nearly a week has passed since Mali and Liel Yehalomi, an Israeli mother and daughter, disappeared in Vienna, Austria, and the investigation has taken a dramatic turn. What began as a search for two missing Israeli tourists has evolved into a complex inquiry involving senior security officials, a court-imposed gag order, and financial turmoil that sent shockwaves through the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.
The case has been transferred to Lahav 433, Israel's national fraud investigation unit, after Israeli security officials concluded in recent days that the incident likely does not involve an abduction or attack with a nationalist motive. A court granted investigators' request for a sweeping gag order on details of the investigation, with a senior police official acknowledging that investigators lack a clear lead.
