Vance: Cheap Oil Before Iran Nukes

In Fox News interview, JD Vance outlines administration's Iran policy goals with economic concerns taking precedence over nuclear threat prevention

In a revealing interview Thursday night, U.S. Vice President JD Vance outlined the Trump administration's priorities regarding Iran, placing economic concerns ahead of nuclear proliferation threats. When asked by Fox News how he envisioned the end of the current confrontation with Iran, Vance was explicit about the hierarchy of goals.

"Goal number one: keep oil and gas cheap for Americans. Goal number two: ensure that Iran never obtains nuclear weapons," Vance said.

The comments come as discussions continue about a possible return to a memorandum of understanding with Iran, though an Iranian official said earlier this week that "no progress has been made" on that front. Meanwhile, the American administration continues emphasizing economic pressure as its central strategy.

Vance elaborated on what he sees as a successful outcome: "What I can say with confidence is that I think this ends with the United States in a stronger position, with Iran without nuclear weapons, and with the Strait of Hormuz returning to a state where oil and gas prices are stable for the American people."

The vice president emphasized the administration's selective use of economic tools: "We're using these tools very selectively, strategically, to achieve the outcome the president needs for the people. To ensure that Gulf states continue sending oil and gas to the world economy, for stability in energy prices."

Vance pointed to falling oil prices as evidence of progress: "I know that oil dropped today, and it's down significantly from the peaks in the early days of the conflict."

In a separate interview overnight with Newsmax, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent further clarified, "We're going to implement measures never before seen against Iran," Bessent promised. "This will be a combination of economic isolation the world has never seen, and the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz that will prevent anything from entering or leaving Iranian ports."

President Trump himself said in an interview this week that the current approach aims for economic victory: "They have 300% inflation, their currency has almost no value. Economically they're in chaos. We control their money. I'm their banker!"

Vance acknowledged the uncertainty inherent in the process: "This is inherently unpredictable because the Iranians themselves are unpredictable, and sometimes they don't honor the commitments they've given us."
