Lakewood: Man Arrested After Violent Road Rage Attack Leaves Driver Unconscious

A 39-year-old resident of Toms River, New Jersey, was taken into custody after allegedly carrying out a severe assault on another motorist during a road rage incident in the nearby town of Lakewood, which has a large Orthodox Jewish population.

According to Lakewood Alerts, police received initial reports of the incident on Friday at approximately 3:30 p.m. Officers from the Lakewood Police Department responded to the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Chestnut Street following reports of a collision between two vehicles accompanied by a physical fight.

The police investigation revealed that a heated verbal confrontation between the two drivers while on the road quickly escalated, resulting in a collision between their vehicles. However, the incident did not end there. Immediately after the crash, one of the drivers exited his vehicle, approached the other driver, and launched a brutal attack. According to authorities, the suspect forcefully slammed the victim's face against the side of his vehicle and continued to strike him until the victim lost consciousness on the roadway.

Emergency responders who arrived at the scene provided initial medical treatment to the victim, who suffered cuts and bruises, before transporting him to a local hospital. His condition was described as non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, officers detained and arrested the suspect at the scene.

The suspect was taken to the police station for questioning, where authorities decided to charge him with aggravated assault. He was subsequently transferred to the Ocean County Jail to await legal proceedings.

Lakewood Police Chief Gregory Meyer addressed the incident and issued a warning to drivers about the dangers of road rage escalation. Meyer noted that road rage incidents can deteriorate rapidly and lead to serious and devastating consequences. He urged the public to maintain composure and restraint, to avoid any contact or confrontation with aggressive drivers, and to immediately contact law enforcement if they feel threatened. He emphasized that no argument on the road is worth injury or imprisonment.

The investigation continues.
